Robert Jospé, in collaboration with percussionist Kevin Davis, has presented The World Beat Workshop in over 250 public and private schools and at festivals and universities throughout Virginia since 1992. The World Beat Workshop, an exciting interactive learning experience, examines through lecture, demonstration and group participation the African cultural influence in American, Central American, and South American dance music. Students will be exposed to the specific dance rhythms associated with individual countries throughout the Western Hemisphere including Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Brazil, and the United States.

The rhythmic structures of swing, rock, salsa, mambo, calypso, reggae, merengue, samba and bossa nova will be explained and demonstrated using drum set and a wide variety of Latin percussion instruments. An historic background as well as the geography of how and where these various dances developed will also be discussed. The workshop can be tailored to suit any age group and level of ability. As a grant recipient with the Virginia Commission for the Arts touring program, matching funds for The World Beat Workshop are often available.

World Beat Workshop 2006

"The Humanities project (part of Arlington Public Schools) had a very positive experience working with Robert Jospe to provide programs at 4 Arlington Public Elementary Schools....Teachers felt that students were very engaged and all of the teachers said they would recommend this group to another school."

-- Mary Eckstein, Humanities Project Coordinator, Arlington Public Schools

"Our experience with the World Beat Workshop taught us how delightfully, intrinsically musical they are. They are skilled at reaching each group's age level and each group's temperament. ...Combining geography, history, music, and multicultural lessons, their "lesson plan" is a model of what great instruction is all about."
