The rhythmic structures
of swing, rock, salsa, mambo, calypso, reggae, merengue, samba and bossa
nova will be explained and demonstrated using drum set and a wide variety
of Latin percussion instruments. An historic background as well as the
geography of how and where these various dances developed will also
be discussed. The workshop can be tailored to suit any age group and
level of ability. As a grant recipient with the Virginia Commission
for the Arts touring program, matching funds for The World Beat Workshop
are often available. Go to Open Beat for an article and video from the C-ville Weekly on the World Beat Workshop.
-- R E V I E W S ------- "Our experience with the World Beat Workshop taught us how delightfully,
intrinsically musical they are. They are skilled at reaching each group's
age level and each group's temperament. ...Combining geography, history,
music, and multicultural lessons, their "lesson plan" is a
model of what great instruction is all about." World Beat Workshop 2003-2004, Henrico County Public Schools “On March 28, 2000, the Head Start classes of Richmond Public Schools and our Delegate Agency, Virginia Commonwealth University and many of the kindergarten, first and second grade classes of Richmond Public Schools enjoyed a wonderful educational music experience by Robert Jospé and the World Beat Workshop.”..” It was very obvious to all that the children really did understand the language of the rhythms and how they were created. You could tell by their outpouring of excitement and participation”..” Approximately 3,000 children from the various programs and schools were in attendance. The children enjoyed the exciting rhythms of American and Latin American music” --- Joyce R. Cosby Coordinator of Head Start “Many thanks to you and Kevin for an excellent performance at The Fourth R conference.”... “ I was certainly impressed that in only 20 minutes you and Kevin taught us some basic components of percussion, tied your performances to the social studies curriculum, gave a convincing commercial for the Commission’s Tour directory, and thoroughly entertained the audience. In short, you were terrific.” -- Peggy J. Baggett Executive Director "In twenty-seven years of teaching, and literally hundreds of assembly programs, I must say that yours was the best. The students were entranced and educated from the time your program began the time it ended." -- John M. Cecil , Teacher "Your presentation at Bridgewater College was terrific! This was without a doubt the finest compilation of accurate information concerning percussion/rhythms and explanations of historical facts that I have witnessed." -- Dr. Tom R. Thornley, Chairman ------------------------------------------------- "Extremely informative and entertaining. Genuine authenticity, the kind of program that enlightens our youth. Congratulations to you and Kevin on your ability to capture an audience and instill in them a real understanding of the West African influence in American culture". - -Dennis Bozic, Coordinator of Gifted Programs -------------------------------------------------
“The workshop that you and Kevin presented was highly informative and well received by all. Your idea of using demonstration as well as group participation was simply brilliant!” -- Johnna Shular External Affairs ”We want to thank you for the wonderful workshops you have presented for us this month. The Head Start programs were especially enjoyable to attend, as you tailored the educational content to their level of understanding. ....Your workshops fit perfectly with the mission of the Children’s Museum of Richmond in providing fun, interactive, experiences for children in our community." -- Sue Lawrence President-Elect, CMOR Guild
