Robert Jospe Express Quartet, Lynchburg University, March 22, 7:30-9:00PM

“The Journey of Clave” Join the Express Quartet with Butch Taylor on piano, Brian Mesko on guitar and Randall Pharr on bass for an interactive concert tracing the journey of a rhythm’s evolution, from its earliest African roots to the popular music of today.

The 5-beat rhythm of the clave [klah-vey] is the musical and historical key that unlocks the link between the rhythms of Africa, Afro-Cuban and Latin music, jazz, and much of today’s hip-hop, R&B, funk, and rock and roll. The word “clave” refers to both the percussion instrument itself–round hardwood sticks–and the rhythm it is famous for, the 2/3 or 3/2 rhythmic backbone that holds all the different polyrhythms together in the rich and diverse array of music styles that fall under the genre of Latin music.
